It generally takes a lot of recommendations for me to read non-SF/fantasy. For example, the book that seekingferret recommends wouldn't've caught my eye except that one of my HS friends w/ a similar taste in books recommended it, plus T$ who usually reads nothing but comic books and books for class is reading it. I'll keep "History of Love" in the back of my head though.
YPU science-fictional, you know... Won this year's Nebula Award and it's up for the Hugo, too. Chabon is not traditionally an SF writer, but SF is escaping its ghetto!
