"I'm not dead yet!"

Woke up this morning with a low grade fever and sore throat. Or maybe "continued to not be asleep" might be better, since I didn't sleep more than an hour straight all night long. Had the AC on all night and it didn't help, so between that and the fever of 99.5F I concluded I was sick. Called the local mega-university's health services triage nurse, and she said I should stay home today, drink plenty of fluids, use my inhaler (I totally forget how often I'm allowed to use it, any ideas?), and I could take an expectorant if I was coughing. Went back to bed.

Woke up, made some soup, ate the soup, un-ate the soup, went back to bed.

Woke up shivering and took my temperature: 101.1F (as in, just over the threshold for flu). Called the triage nurse and left a message. Called again every 15 minutes for the next hour. Took my temperature: 101.5F. Emailed my students to tell them I won't be in tomorrow, and just called the school's absence reporting line. I think I'm going to call up for a same-/next-day appointment. Hopefully that won't go to voice mail too. Hopefully I won't have to call the hamthrax reporting line after that appt.

Oh, no! I hope you're able to get the fever down. Can you take Tylenol/acetaminaphen? That's supposed to be good for a fever.....

un-ate the soup

Aw. :(

I'm waiting for a call back from my doctor. I took some tylenol this morning, and I'd forgotten to take more until you mentioned it. You can tell my brain's not working right.

This might be a silly question, but did you take the tylenol before or after un-eating the soup? If it came out again it can't do its thing so well :(.

I took a Theraflu hours before the soup so it was already in my system, and then the Tylenol a couple hours after the soup so it was unaffected. I once threw up right after taking a birth control pill, and was worried until I remembered that this sort of thing was one of the many reasons I use two methods of birth control.

Oh good, that's one of those things that's easy to slip one's mind because it's hard enough to think when you're not able to keep food down. And yea, between not keeping birth control pills down and the negation effect of antibiotics two methods in a month where one is significantly ill is recommended even for people who usually don't do that.

I wish you the best of luck in getting well quickly!

LOL at "hamthrax" :)

I hope you feel better soon. Also, in case you didn't know, it is safe to take ibuprofen and acetaminophen at the same time; they work differently, so if the Tylenol doesn't help you, you can take ibuprofen without worrying about killing yourself.

Once when I had strep throat with a high fever I was alternating max Tylenol and max Ibuprophen with 2 hours between each dose at the suggestion of my doctor. You shouldn't do that for more than a day or two and talk it over with your doc/the triage nurse first if you think about giving it a go. But yes, it can be done.

Got the term "hamthrax" secondhand through NPR. They were having a call-in contest to name it something more PC than "swine flu." I don't know if hamthrax was the winner, but I certainly like it.

my old inhaler(albuterol) I could use the same as my new one (preventol) 2 puffs twice daily as needed- so I know thats at least a safe dose.

Hope you're feeling better soon- I've been down almost a week with something.

I asked a nurse when I went to the doctor this afternoon/evening: 2 puffs every 4-6 hours. I've never needed more than a single puff at a time, so that's why I forgot.
