HS: Neck

I've been rubbing at a spot on my neck for a while this morning. It's somewhere between irritated and painful. When I just went to use the bathroom, I remembered to check it out. It's on the left along the hairline - try looking at that spot in the mirror yourself. You can't really. A second hand mirror helps some. I'm pretty sure it's an HS cyst, though there's possibly a blackhead there too, or there could be an ingrown hair. When'd I last get a haircut? I think a few weeks ago, so it's probalby not an ingrown hair, but in my armpits those can trigger flareups. Or maybe just the process of shaving and irritating the skin.

So yeah, a nice little cyst starting to flare up on my neck. High enough that I probably can't cover it with a scarf if I get self conscious, and low enough that it's not covered by my own short hair. That's it, I'm deciding not to be self conscious about it. THANK GOODNESS I have an appointment with my dermatologist Tuesday. I'll bring my killer antibiotics with me this weekend to T$'s, I'll wait till tonight to take one to be sure it's HS, and then point it out to the derm. It probably won't grow any larger than a hi-bounce ball by then, and it really can't get as big as a ping pong ball, so ... aw fuck. I have to teach Monday. I really hope it doesn't get that big. How many sick days do I get a year? Ok, stop thinking like that. If I can teach, I should. I can't let stupid cosmetic shit stop me.

If anyone asks you about it, you can always say you're growing a second head in case you need a spare. I hope no one's that rude, though. (And now I want to suggest you see "How To Get A Head In Advertising", which is about exactly that, but only if you're in the mood for bizarre British comedy.)

Hee, sounds funny. But nah, if anyone did actually ask about it, I'd tell them all about the wonders of HS, and then they'd know better than to ever ask me anything again. :-P Seriously, I think it can only help if more people learn what this disease is, so I would tell them as much as they want to know.

I mentioned to my officemate a while ago that the day I was out sick was partially b/c of the HS and not wearing a bra. I said something about how it was silly of me to be self conscious like that, and she pointed out that it wasn't silly at all b/c if students noticed I wasn't wearing a bra they'd be SURE to tell each other, and then it'd end up in all their blogs! :-P
