If my next vacation isn't to Australia, it's going to have to be to Telegraph Hill, San Francisco, to visit with the "Wild Parrots" - a flock of feral red-masked parakeets aka cherry-headed conures mostly descended from escaped/released pets.

If you want some parrots closer to home, there's a flock in Brooklyn. These folks have info and even do safaris to see them.

Ooh, thanks for the information. I'm going to have to check them out sometime. Hm, maybe Turkey Day weekend. Reminds me, any interest in movie-going? My old gang may be seeing Borat, the new Bond movie, or Marie Antoinette.

The specific species of the Brooklyn flock are Quaker Parrots, aka Monk Parakeets. Before my neighbor found and gave me Gabe, I was considering getting a Quaker, but then decided against it and towards a conure (various species) b/c there's something like 5 states where there are laws against various levels of selling, buying, or owning Quakers. It's supposed to be b/c they're such a good introduced species and they'll ruin crops or something.

I could probably be persuaded to see Casino Royale. The others hold no interest for me whatsoever. Would it be all right for me to bring [livejournal.com profile] sinboy along?

i think i heard about something like that in Florida too. exotic pet-type birds that flock on the telephone wires and such.

Yeap, both Quaker Parrots (aka Monk Parakeets) and red-masked parakeets (aka cherry-headed conures) have flocks there. Some states power companies exterminate them at first opportunity. :(
