Puzzles!

To warm up for the MIT Mystery Hunt, try your hand at identifying these objects, and also seeing how far you can get at this puzzle. For the latter, no cheating - you can find all the answers via Google, but you shouldn't. It's ok to use it as a tool to get to the answers though.

ooh, what's latin for 8? i love that kind of puzzle. browser puzzles. ^_^

[identity profile] sammka.livejournal.com 2006-11-17 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
s'not latin.

I'm up to 15... I cheated on #13 though because I don't know silly idioms.

I am stuck on 13 now. Trying to find a list of number associations without the solution to this very puzzle.

DAMMIT! I accidentally cheated! Saw the answer on a search results page.

Yeah, I did that too once. :-P I think Google has a option (in advanced search) to omit certain keywords if you think it'd help.

[identity profile] galbinus-caeli.livejournal.com 2006-11-18 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I did that used the domain as a negative search word. One still slipped through.

If you can't complete the phrase you won't get anywhere :( It's a sort of unfair puzzle.

[identity profile] galbinus-caeli.livejournal.com 2006-11-17 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
puzzles are intrinsically unfair. it is kind of the point.

I just hate to have accidentally cheated.

I am up to sixteen now.

that would be why. grr. i'm still stuck on that one.

[identity profile] galbinus-caeli.livejournal.com 2006-11-17 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
And its more complex than that.

Sept(em) is seven, not eight. So the next in sequence from the name would be octo, but cardinally the next should be nine or nov(em).

[identity profile] sammka.livejournal.com 2006-11-17 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
??? That's totally not what I got.

[identity profile] galbinus-caeli.livejournal.com 2006-11-17 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I got it eventually. Working my way through the romance languages.

[identity profile] zandperl.livejournal.com 2006-11-17 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Not telling! But you could use Google for that. Just be warned, the full answers can also be found via Google, and I don't think you'd want to do that just yet.

it ends at 30. some were pretty annoying.

hmm.. hint.. a zip code in brooklyn, 19th st. and avenue Z is in that zip code.

[identity profile] zandperl.livejournal.com 2006-11-17 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
FYI, I screened this comment b/c it gave away an answer. ^_^

[identity profile] galbinus-caeli.livejournal.com 2006-11-18 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Actually it just gives away a clue.

[identity profile] zandperl.livejournal.com 2006-11-17 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I was stuck around 23, I'll start again sometime. And yeah a few really pissed me off, either b/c they were difficult or b/c they didn't make sense.

Did I invite you to the Yahoo group yet for our Hunt team? Or did I drop the ball on that?

And if I didn't say, congrats on being married!

[identity profile] oh-chris.livejournal.com 2006-11-18 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
you did invite me, and you didn't say. thank you!
