A first in pets' rights?

When a custody/inherritance battle turned bitter, a judge assigned an attourney to represent the dog's rights. I think that's just awesome. :)

I disagree.

Animals should be treated with respect, but not as equals to humans.

I love my animals but I would never and have never, and should never, put them on equal footing with a human. Just think of the issues that could come of that. It would be fine if everyone in the world was reasonable, but they aren't. Take PeTA for example.

My point is that w/o a lawyer to represent the dog's interests, the dog would be treated as no more than a car, and I do not feel that's right. Perhaps the dog should be treated lower than if a human baby were involved, but some consideration does need to be made for what will make the dog happy, and not just what will get the humans to stop squabbling.
