When did we start counting them as dead people instead of spontaneous abortions?

Driver fatigue likely contributed to the crash of a Greyhound bus Sunday morning that left two people dead, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol said.
...
One of the dead was 23-year-old Martha Contreras, who was seven months pregnant, Minor said. Her fetus also died.

Minor predicted that the death of the fetus would eventually be counted in the death toll.

The other fatality was Faro Jahani, a 50-year-old man, Minor said.

would it count as a spontaneous abortion anyway? she didn't so much lose the fetus as get killed while carrying it.

you're right that there's something funny though.

I know someone who delivered live babies at seven months. They needed a lot of intensive care, and one died, but the other is currently alive and fine. My guess is that, if this same person had gotten into a fatal accident and the fetuses were quickly removed, they'd have had almost as good of a chance to live.

I'd say that it's worth mentioning the death of a fetus whenever there's some question that the fetus might have lived.
