That noise!

I guess this is why some people can hear it when the TV's on and others can't. Like me (on the can side), unfortunately. Sometimes I think my hearing's going when it seems like everyone's muttering, but then other times I walk into the room with a buncha people already there and there's this shrill whistle driving me batty and then I see that someone left the TV on a black screen.

world's worst noise! it drives me nuts at work cuz we have a tv for visitors to the museum and the volunteers leave it on for three hours so anytime i walk by i'm like "aughhh!!!! tha noise!!" i always turn the tv off. it's funny how people always look at you like you're crazy when you say "is your tv on mute? it's kind of annoying" :)

It's so strange to me how most people don't notice those noises. They can sometimes hear it if I ask them to listen for it, but most of the time it entirely slips their perception. And then that makes me wonder how the brain and senses work that some people can so easily tune their awareness of it in and out.
