On average, children in middle-income neighborhoods have approximately 13 books per individual child. In contrast, for low-income children, there is estimated to be 1 book for every 300 children.

Where did you get that number? First Book has a statistic saying "nearly two thirds of the low-income families they studied owned no books for their children," which is still problematic but still gets you at a little over 1 book per 3 children, not 300.

It's quoted via the link I gave - click on "Project 236" in the bottom right. They cite it as Dickinson, David K. and Susan B. Neuman, eds. “The Knowledge Gap: Implications for Early Education.” It could be a typo?

It's possible. I just find the number really unbelievable at least in developed countries, and it seems to have been contradicted by First Book, which has good reasons to not overestimate the number of books low-income kids have.

To play devil's advocate, though, most families do have more than one kid, which would push the numbers down a bit. (Although there certainly aren't 100 kids per family!)

Heh. You've got waaaay too much free time on your hands if you're answering me four times in a row. :) Gabe's a really silly 'tiel that acts like a cat at times - she'll do something absolutely ridiculous like not know how to climb down a ladder so she tries to go beak-first, or underneath it, and then fall off really awkwardly, and then sit and preen herself as if nothing happened and she's all dignified.

I love the pants! They look to me like they're wearing little suits with green tailcoats, white shirts, and little yellow or orange pants. And Daedalus looks like she's wearing a Zorro mask. :)

Also, I have such cockatiel envy. I think they are among the cutest creatures in the world. Those tiny crests! The orange Pikachu cheeks! Their funny little beaks! They melt me. :)
