[Maunal] Uribe [1,200 lbs] made an impassioned plea for help earlier this year on Mexican television, saying he weighed a more normal 290 pounds until age 22 and did not know what happened to him.

No one has managed to find suitable scales for Uribe in years and estimates of his weight are made partly by tape-measure.

He kept fucking eating, that's what! Yeah I know obesity is a problem, but it's not all biological folks, it's a mental problem as well.

On the flip side, I think it's awesome that they have to do an order-of-magnitude estimate to determine how much he weighs - I presume they measure an average circumference, assume a spherical cow and density equal to water, and calculate!

heh, 290 is 'more normal' - what does that say for our weight standards today ;P

What I tend to wonder is, when someone reaches that level of weight - wouldn't the difficulty of getting to the food force some sort of dieting on them?

Ever hear of co-dependency? Someone else (who has psychological issues of their own) brings them the food. Same thing happens to alcoholics.

If you can't laugh at tragedy then you'll be very unhappy in life. It's a defense mechanism to something that is hard to wrap your mind and emotions around; I've certainly had my own history with dealing with alcoholic relatives...

I do like laughing at tragedy! Romeo and Juliet is one of the funniest books of all time, IMO. But I'd rather not laugh at my friend's suffering, and I'm too tired to ... um, something... :-P

hehe, i agree about R&J. although i have to confess that my most vivid memory of it from 8th grade English was watching the 1969 movie version, in which there is a lengthy shot of Romeo's bare ass, and a brief shot of Juliet's bare boobs, both of which were extraordinarily shocking and giggle-worthy to a classroom full of 13-year-old girls.

oh, the movie opens with a couple men of the Capulet household wearing some sort of brightly colored spandex outfits and large/stuffed codpieces...the spandex things were half yellow and half red, one leg each color, but at the crotch they switched. very giggle-filled scene, it was. i don't remember running through fields, but then i missed a day of class while we were watching it.

It disgusts me that people are able to et that fat. And 290 normal?! You could lose my body weight and still be a normal sized person. I also love how medications with dangerous side-effects and invasive surgery are seen by many people as easier alternatives to eating less and *gasp* excercise. I'm not a gym person or anything, but would leading a semi active lifestyle really be that difficult?

*sigh* I have my own excuses about not exercising. At least I have the tendancy to stop eating enough when I'm stressed, that'll keep my weight down. If I think I'm overweight, it'll stress me out and I'll stop eating! :)

But there is a difference between overweight and obese. Overweight means being something like 15 or 25 pounds over your ideal weight. I can't remember but obese is way more than that (like 50 or something). I just can't understand how someone can get that fat. What's worse is how stores now have changed sizes for alot of clothing. A size 12 today is bigger than a size 12 of 40 years ago. Because is makes people feel better about themselves to need a size 12 than a size 20, I don't think the change is that extreme but still.

They have got to charter a whole plane. He could not even fit in a whole row of seats. Just from front to back he's wider than the gap between rows.... and he can't even walk on his own!

I heard on NPR a couple weeks ago that some cities are starting to get larger ambulances b/c not all patients fit in the normal ones. (U.S. cities, it goes without saying.) (And yet I said it.)

Reminds me of when I moved into my place and they had one of those plush toilet seats. Man, those're the grossest things ever. I wouldn't sit on it until I replaced it with something hard - and the first one I bought was the wrong shape.

Ooh, they have new open front toilet seats! Honestly, I've never gotten the point of those, it's just so public restroom-y.

Sorry, but I don't think the Big Johns will catch on in Japan, leader of toilet technology. They're too small there. Just look at NYC subway train seats.
