In an attempt to find evidence other than anecdotal that women tend to talk themselves down and understate their abilities and that mean talk themselves up and overstate their abilities, I instead came across this set of advice on how women should dress for an interview. Am I the only one who finds it insulting that a State University webpage would perpetuate sexist requirements such as "Always wear hose to interviews"?

Melamine pork?
Apr. 27th, 2007 07:53 amYou may want to avoid pork for a while. It appears that some of the recalled cat and dog food tainted with melamine was fed to some 6,000 pigs. Some of these pigs were then sent to the slaughterhouse and the pork from around 345 former pigs then entered the human food supply.
States with pig farms using the potentially tainted pork include California, New York, North and South Carolina, Utah, Kansas, and Oklahoma; and poultry in Missouri may also be affected. Keep in mind though that the ham you get at a deli could've come from ANY state, so you cannot say if it's safe or not. Unless you're buying locally and/or organically grown, those're probably safe.

California to mandate cat/dog spay/neuter
Apr. 27th, 2007 10:43 pmIf you or anyone you know lives in California, you may be interested in the proposed Healthy Pets Act, AB 1634. This act would require all owners of cats and dogs greater than the age of 4 months to have their pet spayed or neutered. The purpose of the law is to reduce the number of stray and unwanted shelter animals, and to reduce the spread of disease via animals.
One very big con is the impact on service dogs (such as seeing eye dogs and police dogs) - trained working dogs are exempt from being fixed, however (1) the parents of working dogs (other than farm dogs) are rarely working dogs themselves, so special licenses would have to be obtained to breed service dogs despite the apparent exemption for working dogs, and (2) service dogs are not trained until well after 4 months of age, so even should a training school wish to breed a retired service dog, s/he would already be spayed/neutered. If I lived in California I would lobby/vote against this act based upon this fact alone.

Rhode Island already has a similar law.
