I just found out that my trash service picks up compost materials. But most of the stuff I would compost otherwise, I've got a garbage disposal to get rid of. Which is better for the environment for me to do?

if you put stuff down a garbage disposal, it gets into the sewage system and is filtered out of the water...i'm not sure where filtered-out waste goes, but i'm guessing a landfill. compost is better for the environment.

it's nice that they pick it up for you...my mom has a compost barrel at home, and it's always filled with disgusting maggots in the summer. if the garbage people took the compost away, they have to deal with the maggots, not me!

That's my intuitive thought as well, that processing the water is more wasteful than whatever they do with the compost. Ideally, I'd do the composting myself in the back yard, but I don't have that option, and the indoors worm composting bins I've tried always died w/ fruit flies. (And w/ my current mouse and ant problems I *definitely* wouldn't want to try it.)
