My Dad told me they'll get me an iPod for an early Christmas present. (Yes, my Dad's the Jewish one.) They told me to go out and buy the one I want and tell him how much they owe me. But now I'm not sure which one I want. Here's a comparison table. The problem is that one the one hand I like the idea of having ALL my music handy - my current computer has around 10 Gigs, my 2nd Gen iPod has another 20Gigs I need to transfer over to this computer, and if I end up buying more audiobooks on iTunes, each one is easily 200MB and I go through them in a week, two tops. (My 20gig iPod does not hold all the music I used to own before the mass-wipeages of the MacBook lemon, I had around 30 Gigs at the time.) On the other hand, having internet access nearly everywhere I go is so sexy. So what do you think?

There's got to be a way to rip DVDs to mp4's or whatever format will play on them.

i like having all my music available too. i would get the 160GB Classic if i had monies. and Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/) can rip DVDs for you, just set the dimensions to iPod-screen-size. i'm not sure what format iPods like, but Handbrake has most of them.

I was seriously considering the touch, but I found it to be rather disappointing. ie: the calender on it - you can't input anything into it, you instead have to put it into iTunes and sync it. I know you can put you own DVD's on the classic just type into google "How can I put my own dvds on my ipod" and it will give you directions & programs. Plus you can hold LOTS more stuff on 160 than 16.

I think the classic has been around longer, and has fewer potentials of becoming obsolete soon -- kind of feel like the _idea_ of touch is a good one, but holding off on whether it will catch on and become the next "thing to own."

They will juice up the tough to 32GB/64GB within a year for sure. Can you hold out? Perhaps have them buy a gift certificate for $X to the Apple store, and you can buy a souped-up Touch when they come out. I'm guessing in six months or so. If you can't wait, I'd go for Classic now.
