You imply that equal rights doesn't matter. I suspect that you meant that while gay marriage rights matters, it affects a small percentage of the population.

I feel that it matters a lot: in a broader sense it shows that Republicans/conservatives have a low opinion of civil rights, which results in situations such as illegal wiretapping. While the individual issue of gay marriage directly affects less than 10% of the population (in that not all gays wish to marry), it has much broader implications for how the country is run. Anyone willing to put discrimination in the Constitution shows a high disregard for humanity and the Nation, and I would even call them Un-American.
