OMG, when'd they get rid of THAC0?! That's awesome!

I told the nascent gaming club that I'm advising that the condition of my advisement is that I get to play in the games, and this afternoon was the first time I joined their AD&D 3.5 campaign. I last played 8 years ago, when v2 was the best they had. I had barely figured out the rules when that ended, and now they're all different again. I remembered just enough to suspect that when the DM rolled my character he stacked the dice in my favor. And to know that he's bending the rules - he suggested, and I think it's awesome, that I play an Orcish Bard.

He kept the character sheet since I may will be late to the next game so I may not recall correctly, but I think she's 20 Str, 16 Dex, ~14 Con, 12 Int, 12 Wis, 10 Cha. Yeah, I'll never be the best Bard, but I still get skills like Inspire Confidence or something that adds +1 to everyone else's rolls. Came in handy already when two party members (half-elf ranger assassin, and bat-shit crazy dwarven cleric) were blocking the door between me and the imps (or whatever they were) and there was nothing else for me to do. I've also already used the bardic knowledge thingit.

The others are at third level already while I'm only at first, but I expect to be one of the most consistent players so I should catch up without too much difficulty. Yes, a campaign can be time-consuming, however I NEED it, I need the stress relief, I need something fun to do. It's about time.

Did I mention that we're chaotic neutral pirates? Arr! The ranger gets seasick. I'm trying to convince him that when he gets a pet/familiar it should be a parrot. Or else a dolphin.

You know, I would ask the GM if you can tweak your abilities slightly. Switch a couple of stats so that you actually have sufficient charisma to, say, cast 1st-level spells. You might be able to get away with a charisma as low as, 12, as long as you boost it every 4th level. 14 would be even better. Either way, get a longsword and a shield and wade into the front lines once you've started singing -- with your strength, you'll do almost as well as the ranger. Until your paltry d6 hit dice catch up with you, anyway. On second thought, maybe you should hang back and ping your enemies with a composite shortbow.

Does your GM have the Complete Adventurer supplement? It's got some good stuff for bards -- two of the best bard spells, in my opinion, (Inspirational Boost and Improvisation) and some prestige classes that work well with bard, including Dread Pirate. Avast!

Meh, I'm cool with what I've got right now. Don't wanna go second guessing him. I'm really a kickass fighter too, I use clubs in melee (the same ones I pound my drum with - the blood keeps the human skin drum head nice and supple), and throwing hammers at a slight range. (I'm having a hard time believing we're neutral and not evil, but we'll see.) As I understand, "prestige" things are what used to be called abilities, and he gave me two-weapons, which works for the character concept, so I'm all good there.

I get the feeling that a shortbow would be like a toothpick in my hands anyways - orcs're huge, and with my strength I'm big for an orc. The player's handbook has a really disturbing sketch of a half-orc female in a coconut shell bikini, and my character's from sub-arctic regions and we're currently playing in the tropics, so that's probably what I'm wearing too. I think I'm going to have nightmares.

I think I read that every 4th level you get to add a point to a stat, so I might put it on Cha when I get there. No worries, however it goes I'll have fun. :)
