It's really interesting comparing Thomas Dolby of the 1980's to what we saw a few weeks ago. The longer ago him seems less ... refined than him today. He had band members, big hair, a leisure suit. Now he's shaved bald, is a one-man show even live (if you include the 10% that is pre-recorded sounds), and enters the stage with yellow aviator goggles and a dark brown trench coat that he soon sheds so we can see his hip gyrations rather than his former shoulder shimmies. He has a lot more stage presence live today than he did in videos or live performances back then. I also noticed that in the videos he used in his modern shows, his video guy omitted any shots of his face and most of his body as well, so that we could integrate his current appearance in rather than having the disjointed feel of the old vs. the new.

Man, I'm looking forward to Barenaked Ladies next weekend! *grin*

PS, anyone have mp3's of Dolby? You can YouSendIt to me.

i have pretty much everything he's ever released, at least as an a-side or album. (i'm missing the obscure b-sides).
i'll see about getting them to you.
(i own "the golden age of wireless" and the "gate to the mind's eye" dvd; the rest i got through interlibrary loan. i'm a bad person, mayhaps, but a good librarian!)

You rock almost as much as Dolby does!

Speaking of which, I seem to recall you used to be in a band, and I see a guitar in your icon. You still musical?

well, take off a few rock points, because i totally mispelled yr name in the file i sent to you. :P in my defense, it _has_ been 11 years...
and i still play guitar, bass, and keyboards, but am no longer in a band. i was in a band with the same guy from high school, but then he went back to college and formed a new band. so i sit around and play withby myself.

Thanks, I figured that was you. I'm yousendit-ing it right now. ^_^ And yeah, I misspell my own name occasionally. Next time you get bored, google me, whole name. I'm the only one you'll find. Hm, not that I remember your last name now that I think about it, but no worries. :-P

I picked up a little folk guitar sometime between high school and now, but don't play it ever. I still sing, in a dinky chorus at my school where I'm bizarrely one of the best people in it. That's a really new experience for me, I was used to people like JR being best, but at least she was my friend unlike various stuck up people. Ah, I still remember her asking me to block her so she could pick a wedgie...

i have the opposite problem: i don't even show up on a vanity search. maybe several pages in; i gave up.
stuck up people suck. i still can't stand most of my grade, and as a result, totally avoided my 10-year. i'm still friends with lou, ian, charles, mike m., and i see one or two other people from my year occasionally, but most of them can go hang.

My high school gang has done a lot of drifting, but we usually all get together once a year, Christmas time. It's interesting where some have ended up. JT after Princeton worked for Dow Chemicals in TX, then burned out and now is a low-level pastry chef at Le Cirque. JY's an editor at Merriam-Webster up near me. Bizarrely a bunch of my HS friends and my boyfriend's HS friends have met and get along famously. I guess I pick people by the same criteria today as I did back then.

that's pretty awesome. i'm still very close to the first three i mentioned, as well as rose, although i don't get to see them as often as i'd like; it's actually cheaper to go to boston than it is to go to new york, even counting gas because of traffic.
[livejournal.com profile] lazysun never went to HS, and i don't think her college friends and my HS friends have met yet... and i have no friends from college, but a couple from grad school.

One of my good friends now joined the physics grad department a year after I joined the astro one, and washed out a year after I did. :-P Since we were different years we never had classes together, but we met thru mutual friends in physics. It's awesome, I get to visit her in Arizona every few years now. ^_^
