Oh, Mormons

A 21-year old Mormon woman in Utah wanted to marry a man her parents disagreed with, so they did what any good Mormon parents should do. Under the guise of taking her shopping for the Garments, they kidnapped her and started driving her towards Colorado. The article isn't clear on how she escaped, but she's now pressed kidnapping charges apparently.

Oh, and she did get married to the guy in August, and is due in May, exactly 9 months later.

One of my friends was Mormon for most of their life, so I learned a bit about it because of them. Then they came to their senses. ;)

There are some part of it that I like, but there's sooooo much more that's really scary.

That is how my wife and three of the kids feel (there are six total. One came to his senses after his wedding.) Lots of positive to the church culture, but a little too clingy and controlling sometimes.

For my friend, what eventually drove her out was that she believed that women should be allowed things like goals, an education, and a career, and not just spend their lives as baby factories.

You left out house cleaner and personal services provider.

And that is what drove [livejournal.com profile] fierce_rabbit out too.
