I wish there were a little more factual information in this article. Five teens driving to school went off the road and into an icy pond. It took rescue crews 2 hours to get the car out, at which time the kids were found with their Bibles in their laps, still buckled into their seats, two already dead and the other three did not make it.

The part that's confusing me is if they had time to get their Bibles out, why did they not try to get out of the car?

One alternate possibility is that these people weren't dumbasses, and instead already had their bibles out as they were driving along. As you pointed out, we don't have a lot of facts. I'm not sure why they were still buckled in-- maybe they figured they'd die from exposure in the cold water. Maybe they'd drown. One of them was 12, right?

Meh. Being Christian =/= stupid.

I was thinking about that too, but then that'd mean the driver was reading while driving, as I believe the report said that they *all* had the Scripture out and in their laps. I could be wrong though. The report also doesn't say if they died of the cold or drowning, and if the car was filled with water or not - though I guess if it were entirely full they probably wouldn't've found Bibles in laps.

It's just interesting how they selectively chose enough to make it a good personal interest story, but not one you can learn anything from.

Sensationalism, ahoy!

Reading something while you're supposed to be driving is not very smart either.

It's not clear whether the driver had his or her bible out. As was mentioned before, this story is *very* light on facts. All we know is that these kids ied tragically, and CNN latched onto a detail about the kids having their bibles out. We have little to no context.

Seriously, can we get off the "Christians = teh stupid" angle? It's pretty uncool to broadly paint any group with a brush like that.

I'm not. If the people were discovered with biology textbooks or even People magazines in their laps, I'd have the same opinion.

Ooh, I wish it were copies of On the Origin of Species, that would've been awesome. ^_^
