There's a possibility that Daylight Savings Girl is a lawyer. However as I mentioned to meig, it's possible that instead of being a stupid lawyer, that it's two different people (due to the locations being a heck of a commute), or it could be someone shaming her, or it could be true that she's the lawyer and she really is satirizing the situation.

Googling her full name "Connie M. Meskimen" turns up only blog posts about the letter, and lawyer-y things, so the lawyer is the only real individual with an internet presence. I'm mildly leaning towards it being satirical now. The coincidence seems too high for it to be two separate people, that's one heck of a way to take out a grudge on someone, and I don't want to think that there's any lawyers out there, even bankruptcy lawyers, with that little grasp of science.

I shouldn't tell you about two people I've heard about (second-hand info, but from reliable coworkers) who were in the late stages of acquiring undergraduate degrees in life sciences who didn't "believe" in evolution. Both of them were on track to go into the medical profession in one capacity or another.

I worked with a middle school science teacher who didn't believe in evolution, in "liberal bastion" Massachusetts.

And yeah, if a medical professional doesn't believe in evolution, I'm willing to stick my foot up their ass. This one's personal: I have a skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa in which my immune system overresponds to bacteria normally present in the skin (apocrine sweat glands to be precise) with inappropriate levels of inflammation. (I've heard that 80% of the population has staphylococcus aureus on their skin, and our bodies normally have no problem handling it, and my body doesn't have problems fighting it off other than overreacting in my armpits and some other locations.)

Where my personal stake in evolution comes in is that while it started out as normal staph, throughout my life of doctors administering antibiotics every time I had a flareup (as much as 3-4 times a year), I've watched it systematically become resistant to a number of common antibiotics out there - amoxicillin, cephalexin, and others I can't remember off the top of my head. My dermatologist had me up to levoquin when he decided that I better not take it and we should try other things so that other random bacteria in me don't develop resistance to that too.

If someone tells me they don't believe in evolution, next time I have a flare-up I'll shove my oozing puss-filled lump the size of a baseball in their face and then see what they think.

Oh great. This morning I had to explain evolution to one of my students in physics who's planning to go on for a Pharmacy Doctorate. I told him if he doesn't believe ANYTHING else to evolution, he HAS to believe in antibiotics resistance (we don't can't use penicillin anymore!), and he conceded that there were aspects he believed.

If you just google her last name she is the only one who pops up... granted I know several people who do not have an internet presence. I suppose there is always the possibility of 2 people with the same name in the same state (Hell, when I did my SAT's there were two girls w/ the same name including middle initial).

Like my coworker with diabetes who kept walking for a month after stepping on a nail and b/c he didn't feel any pain (hello, diabetes!) didn't think that the bright red color and swollen to twice its size meant anything to worry about. *shakes head* Wife finally dragged him to the hospital this weekend.

There is something a little upsetting to me about googling the name of a person because you don't approve of their letter to the editor. What were you hoping to get out of it? Ammunition to use against them, ad hominem?

Actually, I was doing so in an attempt to prove that the person who wrote the letter was NOT identical to the lawyer of the same name. meig had posted that the person was a lawyer, and I was attempting to exonerate the lawyer from the stupidity of the letter - I expected to find multiple people with the same name, and failed to do so.

If you read the content of my actual post, I speculate that it is most likely the actual lawyer wrote the letter to the editor as a form of satire.
