I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] sclerotic_rings will appreciate this DIY solution for remembering to water plants. You essentially combine a mosture sensor (i.e. a circuit that goes through the soil of the plant), a couple circuit boards, an internet device, and Twitter, and your plant tells you when it needs watering.

What's funny about this is that a company was offering roughly the same setup about three years ago: the devices were nearly free, but the revenue was supposed to be made by signing up for the subscription service to inform you that the plants needed watering. Much like several other Web 2.0 stupidities, it burned through its venture capital pretty quickly and disappeared before the middle of 2005.

Just cool enough to not actually do it! :-P But I do understand it and think it's neat.

That's nifty.

Oooo... since I get paranoid about the soil touching method (thinking the soil is dry when it isn't usually). With that I also wouldn't completely forget that the plant exists so I could put it somewhere where it wouldn't be a new bird toy or snack as far as the featherbrats are concerned.
