Flight!

Kappa just made her first purposeful flight! I'd been sitting in the dining room w/in sight of her cage, and listening to the birds at the feeder on the window. She'd been putzing around atop the cage making a bit of irritated noises, when suddenly I heard wings from her cage and she flew out of the foyer, through the dining room, and landed on the window screen next to the feeder and near me. ^_^ It seems like she was a bit surprised by where she ended up, and not in good control, but she very clearly wasn't the slightest bit afraid. I put out my hand for her and she stepped right up onto me, her eyes pinning.

Hooray for Kappa!

*Makes mental note to be even more conscientious about closing her cage when appropriate.*

Was she clipped and you let her grow out?

Yes, she was clipped when I got her, though the store says she was allowed to fledge. I've been letting them grow out mostly, though unfortunately one of the times she was boarded they clipped them anyway. She's currently got two nice really long and deep blue primaries, one on each wing, and a couple shorter ones peeking out as well. So they're not entirely grown back in, but that one on each wing was enough that she made it across two rooms.

T$ was less enthusiastic about letting her flights grow out than I was, but he failed to present a convincing argument, and he has not recently shown any behaviors that make me worry about her safety. I haven't yet mentioned today's feat to him - not that she's repeated the voluntary flight, though she has done a couple panic flights in the past month - but plan to do so when he gets home in an hour.

Awesome!

I'd totally give Kappa a set of pilot wings, but I don't think she'd take kindly to having them pinned on.

Hopefully she'll settle for these:

Heh, flying once doesn't yet mean she's a pilot. She hasn't shown any inclination to repeat the feat throughout the day. We'll see how she does with time. :)

Aw, that's great! It takes such baby steps sometimes :-)

I like the wings that allandaros posted! I'll have to make a picture of her with aviator goggles or something!

hooray!
