My mother is under the impression (no sources, just an impression) that hotels in China will have outlets identical to those in the US. My father is under the impression that every city will have a different type of outlet (shape of plug, voltage, frequency) from every other city. His only source is Wikipedia, which appears to directly contradict what he says (it says all of China uses one particular type of outlet).

Anyone know the reality and/or have reliable sources? We're starting in Beijing, traveling across the NW of the country, then flying to Shanghai and Hong Kong.

I don't know, but here's a better resource.

I have found that wikipedia is not as wildly inaccurate as most teachers and professors seem to think it is. I'd be more inclined to believe it than either of your parents.

i'd just get a couple of universal plugs; they're handy wherever you travel.

I may be getting my plugs mixed up but iirc Singapore was the only place that required me to use my universal adapter. I only went to Hangzhou, Shanghai and HK though. I did not bring my laptop though; the only thing I brought that could be charged was my camera.

You would think if they copied all US technology they'd have the same plugs. haha. I will ask around at work to see what other people say.

Okay, I got the skinny on China.

1. It is 220V.
2. Mainland China is two prong, so should work here.
3. Hong Kong is a sad face plug. like: /_\ , also 220V.

So laptops would work, and other things rated to take higher voltage inputs either within the appliance itself or through its power supply.
