Thor 2

Short version: Thor 2 is now my favorite film of the year, complete list of what I've seen here.

SPoilers spoilers pseipkasdkj;okers!

I was a little confused at times during the movie, b/c I'd seen enough images from the film that I think I had built some timeline in my head that it didn't adhere to. That's good though, as if it had adhered perfectly to that, it would've just been checking off tick boxes as it went along.

There was lots of humor that I wasn't expecting - it'd been spoiled for me that the scene with Thor and Loki flying the Dark Elf ship was humorous, but it was even funnier than I was expecting. I was fascinated when I saw the circumstances under which Loki was in ragged clothing on the floor of his demolished cell, I wasn't expecting that at all. It had been spoiled for me that Frigga died, but it was still pretty powerful. It was unexpected to me that Loki got his magic talent from Frigga, that gave his reaction to her death more meaning. (Well, not "got", but still "got", you know what I mean.) It was nice to see that they had a relationship separate from that of Loki/Odin's - in fact when reading fanfic I always liked it when people put this exact relationship between them in, so it was nice to see that it was actually canon too. :) The humor of Loki taking different forms, including that of Captain America, with commentary on his personality and clothing, just had me in stitches.

It's interesting exactly how they made Jane a damsel in distress - she ends up in that situation through her own actions, and she never takes it passively, instead actively trying to learn what's going on during her diagnosis, gleaning what information she can from the Aether possessing her. Sure she doesn't do as much as the gods or even goddesses around her, but she's no god herself, she does what she can. Her relationship with Sif is interesting, there's hints at a strain between them, at Odin/Frigga wanting Thor to "settle" for Sif, and yet Sif does everything she can to help Thor and Jane be together. There's a nice escape montage backed by a planning session. I like that Jane multiple times acknowledges the events in NYC (from The Avengers, which she isn't actually in at all though Selvig obviously is), such as yelling at Thor for not dropping by afterwards or anything like that, though I from the start of this film, it seems that Thor 2 occurred right after The Avengers (though where'd Loki's gag go?). It seems a little fake that she'd slap Loki for NY since she's not a New Yorker, but then again it's not like only New Yorkers were upset by 9/11 either. It's fascinating that Selvig has been driven a little crazy by Loki being in his head - makes me wonder what Clint will be like in the next film he's in. I'm really curious what his canon reaction to Loki's possession of him will be like - fanon is all over the place about it.

That the final climax scene takes place in Greenwich (not actually at the Observatory itself, but near enough for me, and nice that it's not destroyed) was a really nice bonus. I had presumed it was the opening scene, so it being the climax and so much time spent there was pretty awesome. One of my movie partners commented on how much it reminded her of Portal (the first-person puzzle video game where people make teleportation holes and jump through them or throw objects through them). I laughed a bit at some of the scene choices there, it felt a bit like they were recycling sets from Thor 1 and earlier in the movie, but it does fit how the "worlds were aligning" or whatever. I loved the black hole hand grenades. And I loved loved LOVED the final climactic fight scene - seriously, it's like someone turned to the choreographers and said "here's a portal gun, use it in planning this fight scene," AND THEY DID. And Darcy dipping the intern added a bit of fun flair to things. :)

I saw the fake double-cross coming a mile a way. I was a little disappointed that Loki didn't stay dead - my hypothesis was that he'd sacrifice himself valiantly, setting up for a remake of the Journey Into Mystery comic book, starring Asa Butterfield as Kid Loki. I was surprised at Loki shielding Jane, maybe he did so calculating, to get Thor on his good side. I really want to know more about him replacing Odin (did he kill him or imprison him, or what?). I swear I read somewhere that Hiddleston said he wouldn't be in any more Marvel movies, but one of my movie buddies says she swears she heard about there being a Loki-centric film. So yeah, I dunno. I really didn't expect Thor to abdicate the heir role - did he do that in the comic books?

Okay, I think I'm done gushing for now.

There's both a mid-credits scene, and a post-credits scene, so stick around for both.

This's now firmly at the top of my list of films this year (though Ender's Game had a half life of about a week, so we'll see if this drops in retrospect too - Riddick's half life was like 3 hours though). I would see it in the theater again, which is really rare for me, I see like one movie in the theaters twice every five years, if that.

Glad you enjoyed it! We haven't seen the first Thor - do you think we can skip it and see Thor 2?

Yeah, I think it'd be fine, but if you do get the chance to watch it first, I think the context will make things richer and improve the experience. Have you seen The Avengers? B/c this happens soon after that, and that's also got more Thor/Loki development. Thor 1 is on Netflix streaming here also, or you could just read the Wikipedia page on it.

thanks for the (implicit) recommendation!

hope to find time to take a breath and catch one or two movies sometime in the next week or two, and this will be on the list if that actually happens.
