Cashback cards don't really do all that much. Discover gives me 0.25% on purchases up to something like $1,000, and then I think 0.5% after that - so if I spent $1,000 I'd "earn" myself back $2.50. I just applied for an AmEx (I've heard good things about them, especially when travelling abroad). The one I got gives 1% cashback for everyday purchases up to some ridiculously high amount, like $6,500, so if I spent $1,000 I'd get $10. That's nice, except that it's got a 50¢ per-use charge. So if I get $50 in groceries, I'd earn 50¢ which would be cancelled out with the fee. Purchaes of non-everyday stuff only earn 0.5%, so I'd have to spend at least $100 to make it back. Well, now that I know the trick, the card will be more useful. :)
