So I'm doing my hair and guess who shows up? Mouse 4! After I told him I didn't want to see him because I was doing my hair and everything! Gawd, sometimes when a woman says she is doing her hair, she really means it. Now I've got to deal with this guy with my hair all up and everything!
Appearance update
Oct. 15th, 2006 02:53 pmI was just surfing thru my archives (vain, ain't I?) and came across that old eLouai doll maker thing. Realized it might be worth updating the old version to a new version of me.
Any change in facial features is just my ineptness at getting my face shaped right. :-P
My hair's been growing out though, that's real - it grows so fast, and I decided to try for a new look of long in the front framing my face, and short in the back so it can stick up and be fun. However, I'm due for a cut, so it's just kinda raggedy everywhere, and instead of framing my face it just falls in my face, or if I try to get it out of the way it puffs up around my face instead. It's not all that manageable unless I put a lot of time into it, which I'm not willing to do. It's also a lot lighter than before - you may recall I bleached it and made it orange this summer, and before the Fall started I dyed it back human. This's the lightest human shade it's ever been, since the bleached hair just soaked up the brunette. However, the roots, an inch or two worth by now, are my normal color, dark brown, so it's starting to look a bit strange, and my hair in the back is also dark brown. I got a kit of black that I'm going to put in soon to make it all look more uniform, and interesting to me.
Clothing-wise I've been wearing nice T-shirts under transparent button-down shirts, or else T-shirts under heavy sweaters that I take off in class (but have to wear in my office since it's so COLD with huge North-facing windows). Black slacks and $3 black K-Mart boots that need replacing complete the image.

- If you have black hair, don't believe the color on any commercial hair dye packages, you can't do more than change the shade a smidge. Do at least the full time listed on the box.
- If your hair is black and you want inhuman colors, you'll have to bleach first in the pattern you want the colors to be. Then add color to the whole thing; it won't show on the black. If you've got light hair, you'll have to somehow mask the parts you don't want colored, or only apply the dye to the parts you do want colored - tin foil might do the trick, but see below.
- No, you can't do nice highlights on your own.
- Apply Vaseline liberally around your hairline - forehead, ears, nape of the neck. This prevents your face from turning colors as much.
- Make sure you have a hand mirror you don't mind getting dyed so you can check the back and sides.
- A comb or brush (again, one you don't mind getting colored) will help you spread the dye evenly.
- You may want spare plastic gloves - the ones that come in the package will get water in them and are a pain to put back on. If you're doing inhuman colors, the dye might not come with gloves at all. If you have a latex allergy, the gloves that come in kits are sometimes vinyl, and sometimes latex, so either open the kit first to check, or just buy the ones that work for you preventatively.
- Some kits require a plastic bowl for mixing; it should be disposeable, and cups will do as well.
- You will get dye on your shirt. Wear an old one, and cover your shoulders with an old rag on top of that. Use a clothespin to keep it on. Or go naked - it does come off your skin with some scrubbing.
- You're going to get dye everywhere else too. Move priceless items away from the bathroom. It comes right off of metal (such as faucets), but will stain porcelain and plastic sinks and tubs for a couple weeks (but it does wear off eventually).
- Don't worry about getting the dye on your scalp, you really can't help it, it doesn't hurt, and you can't see it.
- If you're bleaching, make sure you've got conditioner and shine product for daily use. These will help your hair feel less like Barbie's.
- Especially when using inhuman colors, use an old or dark-colored towel for your hair after showering for a few weeks. Also put an old/dark hand towel or a rag over your pillow at night so you don't turn it colors as well.
- Also for inhuman colors, use a swim cap when going into a pool. The color running is really obvious, and the chlorine can make the color turn nasty. It probably doesn't hurt to use a swim cap if you're dying human colors too.

Jul. 14th, 2006 06:09 pmI realized the other day that one of the top reasons for dying my hair inhuman colors is entertainment. For the first two weeks, every time I caught sight of myself in the mirror I'd yell "OH MY GOD, MY HEAD'S ON FIRE!" Every single time. It took at least a week for it to wear out.
Now the entertainment lies in other people's reactions. A coworker nearly jumped out of his skin. One of my students' eyes popped out, another was just speechless and immobile. My longest-standing friend said I looked like a Muppet - I think that was my favorite comment. It also reveals a lot about the asker. One of Dad's neighbors first asked me if it was food coloring, then disapprovingly asked what my father thought. I wanted to reply that he thought I was damned well old enough to be making my own decisions. As for Dad himself, I actually walked into the house with a five-dollar straw hat on my head. He said it was ugly, and when I took it off, he said it was an improvement. :-P

- Keep it natural (dark brown)
- Pitch black
- Human color (medium brown, reddish brown)
- Streaks (blonde, pink, red, orange, purple)
- Solid inhuman (see above)
- Shave the sucker
