I visited with Peeper for an hour and a half this evening (6:45-8:15), and I observed firsthand that she is much improved. She was interacting with me, not just passively accepting scratches, so that she turned her head to where she wanted, and complained if I strayed off her head, and crooning with her normal frequency and volume. When I stalled in my scratches, she would turn her head and start preening herself - I'm not sure she'd been doing so much when I wasn't around, as a good amount of dander went flying in the process.
She wasn't entirely her usual self though. I noticed there were white nodules under the skin of her feet (probably the
gout the vet mentioned), and although she was using her legs as normal, she wasn't gripping with her feet (probably caused by the gout). She couldn't perch, and her balance was precarious. With much effort she managed to climb my shirt, and teetered atop my shoulder for a while, but it was easier if I lifted her up - and since she couldn't step up (onto my finger) and it was hard to convince her to get on my flat hand, I usually just picked her up by her back. She was getting tired by the time I left - twice earlier I'd put her back in the cage for a moment and she perked up and waddled out and chirruped a protest, but as I left she just hunkered down to rest. I wasn't sure if they'd been putting her to sleep soon after that time, or if she was just worn out from my visit, but I think I left at a good time.
Peeper was in the exotics room, which contained besides Peeper only one bunny (note on cage said "very jumpy / very very jumpy / use big towel", and there was a paunch on the front of its neck as large as its head), and a second cockatiel. He had bright orange cheeks, and his coloring was "pied" according to the label - his body was gray with lots of yellow/white flecks, and his head was yellow with the bright orange spots on his cheeks, and he had white stripes on the sides of his wings just where Peeper does. His tag said his name was Snowflake, M, "ctiel exotic," and he was only 3 years old - his peach-colored beak confirmed that he was young.
One of the times I put Peeper down I wandered over to the charts for the various animals. Every hour each day and night for Peeper there were marks indicating her condition, not all of which I understood. For the first night Peeper stayed over, there was a scary row of "alive" -s. Guess it could've been worse... Her diagnosis was "low weight and energy / kidney failure / feather plucking". Snowflake's diagnosis was "egg bound".
Her mom came to pick her up while I was scratching Peeper. They didn't even see her for a while, as apparently gray camoflages well with blue jeans. *shrug*
