Two women married in MA have filed for divorce in RI. This is the first gay divorce I have heard of, and it's the first one the RI courts have seen. Their laws are silent on gay marriage and the issue hasn't been forced yet, so this now *is* the first test of their laws. I'm not holding my breath - that is, while I am hopeful RI will do the right thing, it's not clear to me what the right thing even *is* here, nor do I think it'll happen quickly.

I'm pretty sure there have been other divorces, though I can't remember where I read about it. It might have been the Globe, actually.

fascinating. if they don't acknowledge gay marriages, will they just declare that the couple wasn't married in the first place? so then they won't be married in RI, but if they go back to MA, they'll still be married...it can only lead to unified laws for every state.

That would be an annulment, not a divorce. Which for a short term marriage, like this probably was, would probably work out. But for a long term marriage there are sure to be shared assests, possibly including children, whose disposition would have to be worked out.
