I realized today that I had an oodle of voice mail messages I hadn't checked in a while, so I went and checked them today. The exciting one is that the DNA sexing came in on my futurebird - she's a girl! Man, I keep getting girls, it's awesome. And I can't believe I was right, it was totally a bizarre wild guess. Eeeeee!

Oh, c'mon, it was 50/50! :P

Yeah yeah, statistics schmistics. (And in humans at least isn't it more like 51/49? No clue about birds.)

Maybe it's that the last two times I had a bird I was convinced it was male for at least a few months, so I had a track record of being wrong. Maybe it's that this's my third bird that's female (chances of that being 1/8).

In humans, I think it's something like 52/48 male/female, and the theory to explain the imbalance is that men have a shorter lifespan.

I am COMPLETELY DRUNK (see icon), however, so take this with a grain of salt. (My grammar and typing are the last things to go, so I am WAY drunker than I "sound.")

I am COMPLETELY DRUNK (see icon),

I, on the other hand, am COMPLETELY SOBER so I was able to deduce that from your icon and a recent post of yours. ;)

The post wasn't that recent.

...I'm even drunker now!

Drunk blogging on a Friday night. Awesome. What prompted this anyway?

I had one screwdriver, so another one didn't seem like that big a deal....

Okay, how drunk am I?

So drunk I screwed up the ratio...it's 52/48 female/male.

...don't mind me...

yeah, i was going to say, that sounds backwards...also, i think Y-chromosome sperm are weaker than Xs [don't remember where i heard that] so they're less likely to survive the trip to the egg.

It was my understanding that male sperm were faster, because the Y is lighter than the X. It would make sense that they were more fragile than the X, so that it would even out the chances for a female zygote.

(But, y'know, drunk.)

I'm not drunk, but I'm tired, so that I read that the way you intended it, not the way you typed. And I had a typo in a reply above somewhere.

<mortimer_snerd>That's not really fair, you'd say the same thing if they were all males, so the chance is really 1/4.</mortimer_snerd>

Congratulations! =)

True, and of course once I'd already had two birds that were female the chances on the third was 1/2. I just think it's funny b/c I was emotionally convinced based upon her and her sibling's behavior that she was female, but intellectually knew I was just making it up, and then she actually was female.

I totally understand. I was just playing the pedant. Getting a parrot is a really big deal, and I'm happy for you. =)
