I realized that I was starting to fill other's wishes that took little or no money, so I might as well put up a couple of mine.

Step One: Make a post containing your list of (up to) 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple ("I'd love a Potter fanfic icon that's just for me") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want. If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

Step Two: Surf around your friends list (or friends friends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part: If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call. There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

My wishes:

  1. Audible.com gift certificates

  2. Heifer International Chicken donations

  3. An icon that can serve dual purpose for "money" and "rampant consumerism".

  4. Knitting Lessons Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] the_xtina and [livejournal.com profile] soapfaerie, I can update this to: various knitting gear, like for circular things, and for doing those cable braids.

  5. Music - I'll listen to most things once if they're free, but in general I like alt/rock/pop w/ good vocals, dance music (I don't have much of this), and geek rock. Check if I already have them. This time of year I also like choral Christmas carols, Manheim Steamroller (I need more, I don't have any!), and seasonal classical music.

  6. Various other small/medium purchases from my MetaWishlist

  7. Stamps to use - I find it a pain to buy stamps, and I like interesting ones. I save old ones too, usually using all but one, and I still send old stamps in combinations to make up the current denomination of postage

Would knittinghelp.com be a start?  They have videos...

Ooh! I'll have to check that out. When I have free time. Over Break. After I find my knitting needles...

I don't know for sure whether it will help, lots of crafts have a three-dimensional component that videos do not always capture, but it's certainly worth a try if I can't find a live model.

Ooh! Good choice. I don't suppose you can easily find an image where he's instead holding up a sack of money and grinning or laughing? I tried searching and couldn't find one myself.

As for this particular icon, when I try to add it by putting in the direct link, LJ says there's an error grabbing the file. When I download it LJ says it's too big (my computer says it's 44k, LJ needs 40k). Can you save it just a smidge smaller?

oops. i saved it with maximum quality out of habit. turning that down just a little should fix the size. meanwhile i'll look for another picture of him.

Thanks so much! I got the package this afternoon, and managed to put off opening it only until this evening. :-P Between that and the site with videos that [livejournal.com profile] the_xtina linked to above, I'm really hopeful! I tried once with only a book, and it didn't take, and now I can't find my needles...

Yay! I'm glad you liked it. :) Well, now you have needles and a book and some yarn. Hope you like the color. :)
