Steps

Today I wore my pedometer just for fun. 1.3 miles is what I remember it saying at the end of the day before I accidentally hit the reset button. I didn't catch how many steps that was, but I entered my stride as 23", so it is left as an exercise for the reader to calculate (a) how many steps I took today, (b) how far it would be if I'd been able to add the extra digit, 23.4", and (c) how far that is in SI units.

Anyways, that's further than I walked yesterday for exercise, but it's all low impact low velocity walking, whether it's a lab day or not.

According to my TI-85 1.3 miles is 82,368". This is 3581.22 steps @ 23"/step, and 3520 steps @ 23.4" step. You walked 2.092km. Your stride is .5842m/stride @ 23"/stride or .5943m/stride @ 23.4"

Ah, I guess I didn't word the question well to get what I was looking for. :-P Be glad you didn't take my physics test this week. Let me reword.

(a) How many steps did I take today?
(b) The pedometer actually counts steps, so that number is what was really measured. If I inputted the conversion rate from steps into inches improperly, and it should've really been 23.4", how many miles did I really walk today? (That is, how many miles would the pedometer have reported if it kept the extra digit?)
(c) What is the answer to part (b) in SI units?

This is why I dislike online examinations, the student cannot ask the professor how the question was intended to be interpreted.
With said rewording I am led to believe that the answer is:
A)Since we only have 2 sig figs you took 3600 steps, B) increasing to 3 sig figs you walked 84200" or 1.33mi
C) 1.33mi is 2.14km

part b was using 3600 as the number of steps and 23.4" as the step length
