An open letter to my senators and representatives.

I am writing to you today regarding the health care reform bill currently before the house and senate.

The bill as it currently stands sets women's rights back decades. Not only does the bill currently not provide access to safe, legal abortions, but it also does not provide access to the hormonal birth control which would reduce the necessity for abortions. If women are not provided access to safe legal abortions, some women will be forced return to back alley hack-job abortions, coat hanger abortions, or chemical abortions. The greatest benefit of Roe vs. Wade was not that it allowed women to have abortions, women were already having them, but allowing women to have SAFE abortions. In addition, removing access to hormonal birth control will only increase the need for illegal unsafe abortions.

What's even worse is that the bill as it currently stands does not allow for pelvic exams, a necessary routine yearly medical examination for the physical health of women. This routine preventative exam helps catch the early stages of fertility and life threatening diseases such as ovarian cancer or cervical cancer. Removing access to such exams threatens the lives of every woman on such a health plan, and will increase health care costs in the long run through treating the full blown disease instead of preventing it. In addition only women are being denied access to routine exams, giving the message that only men should have the right to good health care.

I urge you to work towards a more equitable health care bill by supporting any amendments that would provide access to abortion, to hormonal birth control, and to pelvic exams.

When it comes to rational feminist rants (i.e., women's rights, not feminazi), [livejournal.com profile] naamah_darling does the best job I've seen yet. Case in point.
Juno (Wikipedia) is a "dramedy" about a 16-year-old high school girl who discovers herself pregnant, and what she does about it. The title character, Juno is witty, irreverent, intelligent, and still an insecure teenager at the same time - reminds me somewhat of my CTY kids. She deals with issues that many adults cannot deal with - as shown by what happens to the adoptive family she selects.

It's definitely worth seeing; makes you think about people and life and what you might do if you were her or one of the other characters. They're all very real people muddling along the best they can - which often isn't very good, but still very real.

So she *is* being tried for "procuring a miscarriage" - which is the same as an abortion, and therefore should be legal under Roe vs. Wade. Why the fsck is this happening in MA of all places? [livejournal.com profile] kadath, where are you and your outrage when we need it?

Edit: As mentioned elsewhere, this sounds like an activist DA with an agenda to overturn Roe v. Wade and willing to lie to a grand jury to do so. I agree w/ you [livejournal.com profile] meig, it's a witch hunt.

WTF?!

Someone explain to me why this woman is being brought up on charges.

A third of the sextuplets has died. Maybe they really should've done the selective abortions in the womb, that way the remaining ones would've had a better chance of living, not to mention developing further.
If you live in MA, there are a few House budget amendments coming up that you should urge your Rep to vote on. Following that link will allow you to send an automatic letter to your Rep agreeing w/ the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) stance. Below are my one-sentence summaries of the amendments, all of which PPLM supports.

House Budget Amendment 704 would reject federal abstinence-only funding and make the Department of Public Health study whether abstinence-only programs are effective.

House Budget Amendment 652 would increase the funding for the state's comprehensive family planning program.

House Budget Amendment 987 would increase funding to teen pregnancy prevention programs.

There's one sentence in the whole thing that grabs me:

"For every $1 invested in family planning services, $3.80 is saved in other costs related to unintended pregnancy."

If that's true, it's amazing. They say nothing about how the number is calculated though, I wish I knew.
A South Carolina abortion bill would force women (including victims of rape and incest) to view an ultrasound of their fetus before allowing the abortion to be performed.

[livejournal.com profile] czarina69 expresses her outrage here, but what I really want to know is what about blind women? There should be an exemption for them, otherwise as the bill appears worded right now they would be unable to have abortions at all, as they are unable to view anything, let alone ultrasounds.
It may be OTC, but that doesn't mean it's any easier to get at Wal-Mart.

I can think of two things that are biologically, anatomically wrong. What can you spot?

ETA: Snopes has a rudimentary article on it, but no actual information is contained.

ETAA:Sending the following comment to Snopes.

My comment regards the below article about a purported photograph of a "fetal footprint".

http://www.snopes.com/photos/arts/footprint.asp

I am surprised the article does not contain further information. For example, any fetus is located within the mother's womb, which is itself composed of many layers. It would be shocking if the fetus's foot could be made out through the placenta. And the mother also has abdominal muscles which are located between the surface of the skin and the placenta, which should further "blur" the appearance of any fetal appendages. Lastly, the positioning of fetuses in the womb usually places the feet facing upwards and towards the back of the mother.

Even though the history of the image is unknown, the probability of it being real is nil. If it were real, then the mother should be in the ER, not sitting around having her photograph taken for kitchy political statements.
Help save Wal-Mart from the radical homosexual agenda!

American businesses across the nation are being blackmailed by the devil himself. They are being forced by the "politically correct" dogma (abortion, homosexuality, etc) of our day to accept his terms. If one chooses to defy this dogma, he will be forever branded as a right-wing, bigoted fascist, bent on forcing his own religion (Christianity) down everyone else’s throat. If the Church or any business will not accept these terms, or truly honors God, there will be hell to pay!

Now Satan has Wal-Mart in his line of fire!

This legacy of faith and love for Jesus Christ by Mr. Walton is being trashed before our very eyes!

After being lambasted for years by the anti-family, pro-abortion, pro-homosexual, radical environmental left, Wal-Mart has finally succumbed to this constant harassment and blackmail. She has now chosen a policy of appeasement to assuage all of the false accusations leveled against her in hopes that the devil will somehow stop being so mean. It is sad to say that Wal-Mart has joined the The National Gay & Lesbian, Chamber of Commerce.

The NGCC called Wal-Mart's action "part of the company's ongoing commitment to advancing diversity (homosexuality) among all of its associate, supplier and customer bases."

The NGCC desires that the world's largest retailer would also become the world's largest promoter of homosexual sodomy!

Wal-Mart desperately needs our help! There is something that we can do. It requires that we get out of the closet and run toward the roar! [link]

Oh my, I didn't realize!

Wal-Mart now dispenses the "Plan B" abortion pill which makes them an accomplice to the killing of little boys and girls in the privacy of American homes.[link]

I'll admit to knowing that one, that's why I was willing to visit them this summer when they were my closest store at some 20 miles away. However, they still don't have to actually give them to anybody, which's why I'm still not visiting them if I have other options. And Target too, they've got the same policy. Got a bookbag from Target yesterday after more than a month hunting for one that had a laptop pouch AND external webbing for a water bottle.
This is a horrible story of attempting to find Emergency Contraception after a condom broke. In my state thankfully Plan B has been legal and over the counter for a while, so a doctor's approval is not needed, however at places like Wal-Mart and Target, the pharmacists who dispense it can still have "morality clauses." This is I continue to avoid both Wal-Mart and Target when possible.

On a happier topic, start using GoodSearch. They're a yahoo-powered search engine that brings in revenue thru ads, and for every time you perform a search one cent goes to the charity or educational institution of your choice. You can change charities as often as you like, and if your favorite isn't listed there's a form to fill out to get them on it. I added my school and I've since virtually donated some 6¢ - I keep changing to animal parrot rescues I read about, and other good causes. I'm now using GoodSearch for my default search engine, you can add them to your toolbar on any search engine but Safari, and only switching to Google when GoodSearch comes up dry. Pass it on!
In response to a post from [livejournal.com profile] sammka, I dug up the following info about how to get Emergency Contraception (Plan B, levonorgestrel) until they finalize the legislation allowing it to be sold OTC to 18+'s.

Plan B is already fully OTC in the states of Alaska, California, Hawaii, Maine, New Mexico, New Hampshire, and Washington. If you do not live in those states, the nationwide EC webpage has a search engine for how to get EC near you. In Massachusetts (and perhaps other states) some pharmacists are authorized to dispense w/o a prescription. And a number of Planned Parenthoods will do online EC prescriptions, but only 9am-3pm Monday-Friday.
The FDA decided that Plan B can be sold over-the-counter to adults aged 18 and over. This reminds me of a conversation I had with [livejournal.com profile] rosefox about how it's strange that while Plan B and The Pill (or maybe just the mini-pill, I forget) have the same chemicals in them, Plan B is now OTC approved and The Pill isn't. As far as I can tell, the distinction that Plan B is a lot higher a concentration, but the Pill is a much longer duration. I'm really not sure what I think of it all.
The Boston Archdiocese's Catholic Charities said Friday it would stop providing adoption services because state law allows gays and lesbians to adopt children.

The social services arm of the Roman Catholic archdiocese has provided adoption services for the state for about two decades, but said it would discontinue once it completes its current state contract. It said that the state law allowing gays to adopt runs counter to church teachings on homosexuality.

--Steve LeBlanc, Associated Press/Boston Globe

I don't get it. The Catholic church refuses to adopt babies to homosexuals because the Church is against the sin of homosexuality. But they're also against other sins, so they shouldn't adopt babies out to people who covet their neighbor's posessions, or have had premarital sex, or who've taken the Lord's name in vain or spoken back to their parents. Do they question potential parential candidates about all their other sins? Why don't they make a big deal about those in the press?

Within an hour of Catholic Charities' announcement, Gov. Mitt Romney said he planned to file a bill that would allow religious organizations to seek an exemption from the state's anti-discrimination laws to provide adoption services.

So does that mean that any organization that wants to start discriminatory practices only has to become a recognized religion? Well then, let's make Wal-Mart a religion, and they can ignore the MA law requiring them to stock emergency contraception!
A study by Baruch College (CUNY) says that Texas parental notification laws have reduced the number of minors having abortions, however it increased the number of (riskier) second trimester abortions. The CNN/AP article doesn't say whether or how they controled for other factors such as increasing contraceptive use, nor whether the results are statistically significant (though one presumes they wouldn't've made the press release if it wasn't significant).

In Georgia, a woman 37-year-old woman statutorily raped a 15-year-old boy. She got pregnant from it, which allowed them to get married without his parents' consent under Georgia law.

Georgia law allows children of any age to marry -- without parental consent -- if the bride-to-be is pregnant. The law dates back to the early 1960s and was written to prevent out-of-wedlock births.

(CNN/AP)

However, the pregnancy is being used to charge the woman/mother-to-be/bride with statutory rape, while the boy/father-to-be/groom has been ordered to stay away from both the woman and his former guardian because he violated probation for a previous burglary charge when he skipped a day of school for his wedding.

Fucked up any?

Meanwhile, I wonder if Georgia has parental consent for abortion laws. If so, if in a situation like this, it were the minor who were the pregnant wife, and she got married, and then decided she wanted an abortion, would she get to choose, or would she need parental consent, or would her husband now be considered her guardian?
A recent CNN article about parental notification laws in New Hampshire got me thinking. As I understand it, the argument goes that parents are legally responsible for all that children do, so they should be notified if their minor child has an abortion. Furthermore, some states go on to say that the minor even needs parental consent to have the abortion, again presumably because the adults are older and wiser than the child (as evidenced by her unprotected sex, or her inability to prevent her rape). For me, this begs quite a few questions.

  1. This one (set) is probably already written in each parental consent law, but I've never heard it mentioned. Does the minor need the consent of both parents/guardians? Or only one? What if they disagree? What if one parent has custody? What if the minor is a ward of the state?

  2. If a minor is forced to have an unwanted child by her parents (or even if she wants the baby), who is legally responsible for the well-being of the baby?

  3. If the parents are given the right to prevent an abortion, shouldn't they also have the right to force an abortion?

And with those happy thoughts, I bid you good night!

As if there weren't enough silly people going about thinking that their babies fetuses were full-fledged humans, there's now count-down tickers you can put on your blog that count how "old" it is and in what stage of development. You'd think that a ticker with milemarkers such as "my spine is growing," "my lungs are mature," and "my brain is growing fast," would not convince people of the humanity of feti, but ...

Our hand-drawn pregnancy tickers are ideal for modern parents to share the progress of their pregnancy.
