Reunion

The reunion was good and eerie. People weren't as scary as I thought. Make sure I post more about it later, just wanted to say that I survived, and it was a good thing. I got home at 3am!

Phone call

Jan. 22nd, 2006 09:45 pm
The other day my mother called me from the nursing home where my Nga Boo (grandma) is staying these days. After chatting with Nga Boo for around ten seconds, including wishing her an early Gun Shi Fah Zeh (Happy Chinese New Year's, Sun Jan 29), I then talked with Mom for a while. Apparently Dad suggested that this year, for their 40th anniversary, they renew their vows. It surprised me that Mom'd go along with this in the first place, as she's not all that romantic, and while Dad is, she doesn't understand what he views as romantic. I said something like, "oh, huh!"

She went on to say, "Dad's been looking at the world in a new way since he got injured. He was thinking since we've never been to Vegas, we should do it there, and I agreed."

"That's neat! I'd love to --"

"And he wants us to get an Elvis impersonator."

Dad update

Jan. 22nd, 2006 09:39 pm
In case anyone's been kept up at night worried about it, Dad had knee surgery on his left knee on Saturday last weekend. The nerve blocker they used was really good, but of course when it wore off the next day wasn't so good. He's got a hard brace on his whole leg. Within a month he'll get the same surgery on the other one, followed by some 6 months of rehab. :( Could be worse! It turns out that he'd torn both knee-quad tendons 3/4 of the way through.

WHEE!

I had an awesome sleep-deprived weekend, and I saw everybody!

  • [livejournal.com profile] tacotortoise was running our 2006 MIT Mystery Hunt team; that rocked as usual. One of my encounters with him was entirely incidental, as I was leaving lunch with other friend ([livejournal.com profile] rosefox, and non-LJ, see below) and ran into him and another picking up...

  • [livejournal.com profile] tikva who I found to be quite outgoing and cool, but I didn't meet long enough to get more impression than that. Hopefully that will come, as her pictures do not do her friendliness justice!

  • Brodie, who was appropriately friendly at the appropriate times, and I wish I could've hugged. I have so far met two dogs I liked (among innumerable ones I have been neutral about or disliked), and Brodie makes the second. What makes a dog I like is friendly but well-behaved about it. :-P Yeah, I'm picky. That's what you get with allergies. :(

  • [livejournal.com profile] rosefox, whom I hadn't seen in TEN FUCKING YEARS, way too long, and for all too brief (if that is at all coherent), I'm going to make it a point to see her again as her schedule allows.

  • Various others without a significantly self-identified web presence.

  • And unsurprisingly surprisingly, I ran into [livejournal.com profile] iresprite in the lobby of Arisia. (ETA) Who mentioned that he'd just been chatting with one of my NYC friends on the phone that morning! :-P

I fear my coherency factor is running low. Solid sleep is probably needed to recharge it. Unfortunatley, that sleep is to be punctuated with waking, followed by finishing syllabi and week-1 lessons.

Squee!

MIT Mystery Hunt tomorrow! Heck, today!
I saw Brokeback Mountain with [livejournal.com profile] meredithanne42 last night. I talked with my Dad on the phone afterwards.

Dad: So did you and her make out during the movie?
Me: *blinks* Yeah, and we took pictures on our camera phones to show our guys.

<shakes head and sighs> Oh Dad...

In the year 2006 I resolve to:

Point and laugh more.

Thankful

I know it's the day after, but it occurred to me I hadn't really thought about what I'm thankful for.

My family (including Peeper)
My friends (including T$)
My health and my health insurance (which I and my dermatologist are currently trying to bludgeon into submission so I can keep my health)

Family and friends
Health insurance too
I am thankful for

They're coming up to visit for Thanksgiving and I'm attempting to cook the turkey. Dad's bringing cold cuts - I like to say it's in case I screw up the turkey, but the main purpose is for other meals. They left the house an hour and a half ago, and have since travelled 30 miles. The 175-mile trip usually takes 3 hours, but it'll probably take them 6 hours tonight, putting their arrival at 10pm. Yeah I know that math doesn't work out (30 mi in 1.5 hours = 1/3 mph, 175mi/(1/3)mph = really big number of hours), but traffic always clears up later in the day, even holiday weekends. Even so, Dad's driving in traffic for 6 hours, and Mom's riding in the car with him for the same amount of time. They really love me. :)

Most mornings I chat online with my old roommate, [livejournal.com profile] jethereal. This was a bad morning, with the conversation starting off with me saying "ugh" and ending with him admonishing me to try and have a good day as I ran out the door and off to work at 7:40ish. I had to be there by 8am, and it was going to be close.

I threw on shoes, jacket, etc., pulled the apartment door shut behind me and turned to lock the top lock on the door. My hand came out of my pocket empty. This was a Bad Thing because the bottom lock is a slam lock. My other hand went into my other pocket - it was lumpy, maybe the keys were there with my car keys. Nope, lip balm only. Out came the cellphone and dialing my landlord as I jiggled the doorknob in vain. Three rings and his machine picked up, he must've gone off to work already. I continued fidgeting on the doorknob as I contemplated my options: could I slide a credit card under the latch? No, I didn't really know how to do that, and the frame might be too uneven. Could I take the bus in, yeah, but that takes 30 minutes minimum, 45 to an hour typical, and I only had 15 left. I could call the landlord at the shop, I'd have to do that eventually anyway to get back in in the evening, and I'd have to call someone at work to stall my lab kids, or I could -- the doorknob turned. Well! I knew I was having issues with the lock, but that's quite convenient.

I ran in, grabbed my keys and my keys, and ran back out. As I turned to lock the door and succeeded, my cellphone rang - my landlord had caller ID and had called me back. I apologized profusely for waking him up and explained that I had thought I'd locked myself out. I'll call him later tonight when he's more awake and explain that the lock undid itself at the right moment, and see if he can figure out why it's not working right. :-P Yeah, I look gift horses in the mouth.

I told my students the story and one said "huh, Murphy worked in your favor!" She's right.

This afternoon I cranked the ignition for some 30 seconds (that's a long time) before it registered that it wasn't catching. I stopped, tried again, and it caught right up.

And now that it's been nearly a year since my recycle bin blew away (I've been putting items out in plastic bags since, which is less convenient and sometimes overlooked), I tried for the third time to drop by the DPW and get a new one, they've always been out every time I tried, and there was exactly ONE left!

A number of companies with pharmacies, now including Target, allow their pharmacists to refuse to perform their job duties based upon religious objections. Specifically, I am talking about pharmacists who refuse to dispense legally prescribed birth control or emergency contraception. If nothing else, you should be pissed off on behalf of the poor women with PMS, severe migraines, or severe achne who take birth control for NON-SEXUAL reasons! I'm pissed because they're specifically condoning having their employees not do their jobs.

Thru the Planned Parenthood site, I wrote a letter to be emailed to Target on the topic. My text is below if you wish to copy it. I plan to also write a physical letter as I believe these are more effective, however I am first waiting to give a friend who works for Target the chance to rebut Savage's (and others') comments.

Man, I'm getting psyched up for Saturday's Halloween Party! I've got 5 people staying over, two on the futon, two on Jethereal's large air mattress, and one on my twin air mattress. Amazingly, I'm pretty sure I've even got enough sheets and blankets and pillows for them. Another four people said they might want to stay over, but they're gonna hafta provide their own sleeping stuff, and if they do I'm just going to have to put one in the bathtub so I can take a picture and say I had a party so wild that someone slept in the bathtub. I've already advertised the party as "you must drink at least as much alcohol as you bring," and last year I had between 5 and 8 people stay the night. This's gonna be awesome!

Now, if only I had a clean apartment...

Ooh, and wait'll y'all see my costume! I haven't finished constructing it, but it's gonna be great, I just know it.
