My dad got me a new digicam! It's semi-SLR, meaning that while I can't swap the lenses, it's got the option for entirely manual settings, including focus. I haven't yet figured out how to meter in the manual modes, but I only got it yesterday. :-P It's 12x optical zoom, and VERY nice. Photos sometime this weekend, I hope.

Oh yeah, it's a Panasonic Lumix DMC-F27, and he got it thru B&H photo.

I should go back for that one of these years. I'll be there this summer though for the astrocamp. :)

shiny!

does it give you good viewing options while focusing manually?

my Pentaxt *ist DS (lowish-end dSLR with the an endearingly good viewfinder relative to its price bracket) has been an excellent toy so far (see pinecone picture), and i hope you have a similarly positive experience.

When manually focusing, it zooms on the center section so you can see better how focused it is. It also has a bar on the right indicating the range of distances which should be in focus. What's suprising me is it doesn't seem to have a light meter when manually setting the f-stop or shutter speed. It seems my best bet there is to take a photo on automatic, and then push or pull the f-stop or shutter speed appropriately. Alternately, I could just try many various combinations of settings (from 1/300th of a sec to 60 s, and a range of f-stops I didn't take note of) and look at the image.
