The only thing I dislike about the iPhone 4S camera is its color rendition at night - without the flash it's too yellow and bland, with the flash it's too saturated and washed out. That said though, I made my boots!

And within the cut below, in order are the target image, the result w/o flash, the result w/ flash, and a close-up of the embroidery.

Cut for photos )

As usual I don't think the final result is perfect, and there are things I can actually improve if I'm to keep using this costume in future years, but it's pretty danged good if I do say so myself and certainly shows a lot of effort. The boots have a foam insole, but are basically a pair of slippers. I'd like to someday add an outsole, but the flip flops that I was going to use for that, I'm not sure how to attach them, and they're not quite shaped right anyways.

Here's some recent cute photos of Kappa!

Almonds in the shell are one of her favorite toy/treats.

I saw this flag flying in Savannah, GA, on my road trip this summer, and at the time couldn't identify it. It's apparently the first version of the US flag, called the Grand Union Flag, flown unofficially from 1775 to 1777, when a flag was officially adopted, replacing the Union Jack in the canton (corner) with the more well known field of blue with 13 stars. The Grand Union Flag draws inspiration from the flag of the British East India Company.

The horror!

Can you tell I'm sorting my trip photos for the last couple of weeks?

Earlier this year, one of my Mom's cousins emailed us a crapload of family photos, mostly from the 1920's and 20's I think, that he'd scanned and color-corrected. I've finally uploaded them to Flickr and added some of my own commentary. In case you'd like to see a few samples and don't want to go there, here's some of my favorites.

If the flower in the girl's hair is is white, that means she lost a mother or father recently, according to [livejournal.com profile] blahblahboy's mother. Seeing as these are "family" photos, and no one else in the family there has a flower in their hair, I suspect the girl is a family servant. (Then again, would a servant have been in a family photo?)

img004
Oh yeah, did I mention they were stinkin' rich? That's real fur.

There's so much character revealed in their faces, and more yet hidden.

I actually know everyone in this photo. It's Atlantic City, 1960's.

Nga Boo on the left. I wear that jacket in the summer now. The same jacket, not a repro. I'm guessing 1970's-80's?

For those of you who aren't already familiar with my skin condition, hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), you may wish to skim that link. [livejournal.com profile] framefolly, remember how I said the other day that you shouldn't post anything unlocked that you wouldn't get up in front of a room and tell your whole class? Well, my posts on HS are my exception to that rule, b/c I want to make the condition more well-known and remove the stigma from it. I *still* wouldn't stand up in front of a class and tell them about it, primarily b/c it's not relevant to the class, but I have talked about it with a couple individual students.

So, back to the reason for this post. I've got a cyst at the belt line. I haven't had one this big in months, that much is great, but getting one now isn't. It's probably *because* of pants that I have it in the first place - pants rub on your waist, but you don't ever notice it until you have a horrible painful bump right under that rubbing spot. How painful?

This painful: (photo) )

Yeah, I've never shown pictures of it before, not sure what prompted me to do so now.

I cannot wear normal pants b/c the belt line falls right atop the cyst. I can't wear low-rise jeans b/c the very top edge of the waist rubs against the bottom of the cyst. I can't even wear normal sleep pants, despite how soft they are. What I'm wearing right now is these cotton super thin sleep pants without elastic that are basically the scrubs you wear as a hospitial patient. I tie them very loose so they're nearly falling off my hips and then they're below the cyst enough that it only irritates a little. Yes, that's my pink undies you see right below the cyst, bikini style, that's how low I have to wear these sleep pants. And I'm currently wearing a sweatshirt without any elastic at the bottom, because again the elastic would rub on it. Even so, moving around too much hurts because your skin always flexes. (Never noticed that before, did you?)

So what do I wear to work? I had to dress nice today for a luncheon, so I found a long sleeve slightly formless dress (c/o the last chorus I was in), in black velvet(een?). Since it was black, I spruced it up with red and green so it wouldn't look like I was going to a funeral - it's appropriate for a NYC wedding instead. ;)

See? )

Tomorrow if it's clear I'm going to have to stay out late with a class doing an extra-credit observing session, so a dress is out. I'm debating wearing a dress during the day and changing into overalls, or just wearing overalls. I'm probably going to go with the overalls just b/c changing's ridiculous. I don't like dressing that sloppy, but I think it's warranted - overalls are also warmer than normal pants. Ooh, I can wear the ones Mom made me, out of really nice white tapestry material. If I already sewed the button back on, hm, maybe not. :-\

I hate my skin. Back to soaking it.
If you haven't been following the news about the wildfires around LA and south-western California, the satellite photo below tells the picture pretty well.

click for higher res versions

Note that the fires are producing the white smoke that looks nearly like rain clouds. I believe the tan streaks off of Mexico are sand and dirt being blown by the winds. Red spots are where the fire is currently burning. If you click on the image, you'll get a higher res version from NASA, and if you pick "250m pixel size" you'll get the highest available.

If you live in SoCal, expect asthma and allergy problems. Apparently most of the soot particles are small enough that they'll go right through normal dust masks. If you have birds, get them out of the region, North or East, if you can.
In cleaning my house, I just discovered a whole slew of 2003 Paris photos, all on film. The B&W ones I need to find a negative scanner. The color ones I got a CD of when I had them developed, so they're going up on my Flickr account. Someone prod me if I don't remember to feature some of the good ones here. Meanwhile, sadly, my pro Flickr account is to expire at the end of the week. :(

And heh, uploading my photos to Flickr via my desktop PC is apparently slowing down my network, as Pandora is stalling here on my Mac. :-P Amusing. Never noticed network slowdowns before.

Yay Cage!

Apr. 11th, 2007 04:56 pm
Gabe's such an easy bird. Yesterday I cleaned out her new cage. This morning I put it next to her old cage when I went to work. When I got home from work I swapped in a number of perches and toys, and put her atop it. And a few minutes later she was sitting inside munching on seeds (I gave her extra) and going back out to pick at toys.

The new cage is only a smidge bigger than the old one, the main benefit is it's not rusty. I still would like to get her a bigger one, but for now I'm not worrying about it until after I next move.

Here's a couple quick snapshots of Gabe and her cage. )

I think for now I'll clean out and save the old cage in case there's anything wrong with this one. After a while I may throw it out since it's rusty, or give it to my neighbors - I think their budgie cage is also rusty, and this one's bigger. Or maybe I'll just buy them a new cage for fun.

ETA: You may have noticed from the photos that there's four cups inside her cage. Her old cage had two, which I designated water and pellets, and I added an additional cup that I moved around that contained seeds or veggies. Right now I've got in the current cups: water, pellets, seeds, and nothing. She just sat in front of the empty cup for a few minutes, poking at it, and then tipping her head with her crest up. Poor thing's confused! I think I'm going to put some beads/toys in, and see what she does, and I'll swap them all around every couple days.
Next time you're bored in NYC (or most any city) for a day, grab a few friends, a camera, and print out copies of this list. Go to!

Personally, I find the "tightest parallel parking" category a bit cheesy, as the person could've been parked in, rather than getting into the spot in his/her own right.
Just 'cause I love y'all so much more than the [livejournal.com profile] parrot_lovers community, here's a photo just for you! It's Gabe, using her feet! Not only has she gone bonkers over the lanyard w/ beads toys I put together, but just today I caught her raising her foot towards the one hanging from the ceiling. After impatiently watching for a while with my camera, she finally grabbed ahold of it with her foot and held it for a little bit while beaking it. ^_^

P1020152.JPG

Awesome! Usually only bigger birds use their feet, cockatiels and budgies (parakeets) are not known for doing it much, and Peeper never did. Gabe used her left foot here, it was the closest one to the toy. I'm going to have to watch and see if I can figure out if she's a righty or a leftie. :)
She's playing with toys! Yay. ^_^ Some photos too here:

I went sight-seeing thru Midtown yesterday. Man, am I tired! I'm not used to walking that much. Most of my photos came out slightly blurry b/c I didn't bother with a tripod, but here's a couple anyway.

po-hotos! )

I also bought myself some pretty funky shoes (scroll down a full screen). I'd tried on some even funkier ones back in Turkey-month w/ JT, but those weren't shaped quite right for my feet.
"It all began innocently enough when a visitor to an Apple forum posted a picture of his cat, Frankie, contemplating the beauty of a flower. Shortly afterwards another user posted a picture of his cat bristling at the image of Frankie on the monitor. I decided this was too much fun and advanced the concept as The Infinite Cat Project which is, simply, cats regarding cats regarding cats in an electronic milieu."

Damn you, [livejournal.com profile] sclerotic_rings!
It's rated G, I swear! )

The shower perch was the best investment I've made for Gabe yet. First time I used it I had it on the back wall of the shower, away from the spray. He settled right down and started preening, and every time I moved he made those croony-squeals that meant I was too close to where HE had staked out. This time I put it on the side wall, and he immediately leaned forward ALL the way down with his wings spread out really really wide, ruffling feathers, tail straight up, letting the water get between his feathers and down to his skin. *grin* Gabe knows how to shower! I didn't want to get the camera wet, so the only photos I grabbed were after the fact. He's all wet and comfy and happy, it's awesome. ^_^

As mentioned a while back, [livejournal.com profile] amavia was looking for some people with birds for stock photography, and Gabe and I volunteered. Tammy's a professional freelance photographer and graphic designer, specializing in pet photography, her webpage is rubicat.com, and I really can't say enough good about her. Our experience in person was very good: lasted an hour, Tammy made both Gabe and myself feel at home in her studio, and she was quite comfortable handling Gabe herself.

And of course, in the end her photos speak for themselves. )

If you like the photos, compliments go to [livejournal.com profile] amavia, not me! And the best compliment is your business or sending other people her way. She's located in the Boston, MA area.

Oh my goodness [livejournal.com profile] amavia, you are an absolute goddess! Everybody go give her your business. I'm going to go pimp you out on the [livejournal.com profile] cockatiels and [livejournal.com profile] parrot_lovers pages too, those'll be up within minutes. (Who needs sleep? Or grading?)
[livejournal.com profile] amavia said she just sent out the CD with Gabe's photos! I'm really excited, I can't wait ot see them all. ^_^ So far the single sample she sent was really awesome!

OK, sleep time. Grant's in, school's grant person said it was awesome. If anyone wants me to post more on that, send me a memo and i'll do so, otherwise i'll probably be freaking out about the three midterms I have to grade and the 4" stack of other overdue grading I have to get done.
