Want a new experience?

Try a neti pot!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8sDIbRAXlg

"Breathe through the mouth, and enjoy the warm, soothing feeling." More like "try not to drown!" My doctor recommended this for my cold symptoms. I'm not sure if it's worse than not breathing, but I suspect it may be.

That's the neti pot I have! I've found it doesn't work so well when I'm -really- congested, but if I can breathe at all through my nose, I like what it does.

I use something a little different. The neti pot doesn't give me enough pressure to really clean things out.

I use the Sinus Rinse here:
http://www.neilmed.com/usa/products.php#sinusrinse

It's a weird feeling to use it at first but you quickly get used to it. It works really well to lessen my allergy symptoms.

I'm going to stick with my Veramyst. At least it's side effects don't include drowning.
I think hot tea with honey and lemon won't be challenged as for the top home cold remedy spot by this.
This guy's face says it all.

does the sensation of drowning get any better? :-P

Yeah, the way he looked the first time is how I felt. The second time (with the coffee) it's clear he didn't keep breathing through his mouth - which is understandable when you put something like COFFEE in your NOSE.

Hot tea wasn't doing me a lick of good.

Ugh, I just reallllllly didn't like how it felt. maybe with practice, but I do'nt know if I think it's worth it.

I think the only time it feels disquieting is when I tilt my head wrong and the salt water starts running into the back of my throat and into my mouth. Ick. But that's not so much a drowning sensation. I've been doing this for many years, now, so I don't remember if it ever felt like drowning. Maybe. A little. But I wouldn't call it a "warm, soothing feeling", either.

Only surpassed by the sensation of WHISKEY in your nose.

That's gotta burn.

I second the NeilMed recommendation. It's great. I have a drowning phobia and it doesn't bother me at all.

I didn't watch what he did, I just saw the picture of his face in the related videos.
I know you don't normally do spicy food, but you could try a magic berry and then eat something spicy during the period where the taste doesn't register (it actually comes up sweet). It might clear you out if pseudoephedrine is failing you. Are you taking an expectorant? I find that nondrying pseudoephedrine/gaufenaisin (sp?) to be excellent for tough congestion.
Hope you feel better soon.

I clicked on that link expecting to be able to say something snarky about how that really isn't magic...but wow. Now I want to try one of these!

I know my sensory altering botanicals.
they're like $5 each, $3 if you buy them in bulk. Which you should do and then host a flavor tripping party.

I once laughed while taking a shot. That was a special kind of hell for a few minutes. I think it may have been the worst feeling anything has ever caused in my nose. Certainly pretty high up there on the list.

Pseudoephedrine's doing nothing for me. :(

I do "poor man's neti" at least once a day (in the shower mostly) and I think it helps. I did get a neti pot but I've been too lazy to use it. When I feel a mega cold coming on, I'll probably break it out. i do have at least a small drowning phobia, but I think I should be able to get over it. I didn't freak out too badly when I did the nostril-to-nostril thing. Mostly it was just uncomfortable because of the neck-tilting and mouth breathing at the same time.

Anyway, poor man's neti is getting your fingers wet under running water repeatedly and using them to gently work everything out of your nose. That's my version, anyway. I don't do the head tilt pouring process, or the "sniffing saline" thing, since I imagine it's not great to do with our super-chlorinated tap water. Helps keep the nose goblins down all day, at least.

Ouch! Personal experience tells me Rum & Coke is a pretty nasty nasal sensation, not one I care to repeat. Laughing in bars is dangerous.

Yeah, I agree. You *have* to make sure your head is tilted downward so gravity takes the water out of your nose instead of down your throat.

It's pretty important that you use a saline solution and not just plain water. The NeilMed stuff that I use comes with its own packets of stuff that you dissolve in slightly warmed distilled water. If the water is too cold or too hot, it isn't a pleasant experience.

The sinus rinse is actually easier to use because you squeeze the bottle and you don't have to tilt your head into weird sideways angles. I have a neti pot, too, and I prefer the sinus rinse bottle. I found mine at Walgreens. I think it was about $15 for the bottle and a whole bunch of saline packets.

Ooh, the fizziness from the coke has to suck pretty hard.

The acidity's worse than the fizz.

I'm not sure about that. I've breathed in HCl gas before and while it's not pleasant, it doesn't even come close to being the worst thing that's been in my nose. Not that I'm about to snort various sodas to see what effect pH has on the unpleasantness level.
