Try a neti pot!

"Breathe through the mouth, and enjoy the warm, soothing feeling." More like "try not to drown!" My doctor recommended this for my cold symptoms. I'm not sure if it's worse than not breathing, but I suspect it may be.

That's the neti pot I have! I've found it doesn't work so well when I'm -really- congested, but if I can breathe at all through my nose, I like what it does.

I use something a little different. The neti pot doesn't give me enough pressure to really clean things out.

I use the Sinus Rinse here:

It's a weird feeling to use it at first but you quickly get used to it. It works really well to lessen my allergy symptoms.

I'm going to stick with my Veramyst. At least it's side effects don't include drowning.
I think hot tea with honey and lemon won't be challenged as for the top home cold remedy spot by this.
This guy's face says it all.

been there, done that...

I do "poor man's neti" at least once a day (in the shower mostly) and I think it helps. I did get a neti pot but I've been too lazy to use it. When I feel a mega cold coming on, I'll probably break it out. i do have at least a small drowning phobia, but I think I should be able to get over it. I didn't freak out too badly when I did the nostril-to-nostril thing. Mostly it was just uncomfortable because of the neck-tilting and mouth breathing at the same time.

Anyway, poor man's neti is getting your fingers wet under running water repeatedly and using them to gently work everything out of your nose. That's my version, anyway. I don't do the head tilt pouring process, or the "sniffing saline" thing, since I imagine it's not great to do with our super-chlorinated tap water. Helps keep the nose goblins down all day, at least.
