I'm going to a friend's wedding on Thanksgiving Saturday, she's the bride. The attire is semi-formal, the ceremony will be non-denominational, the bride is wearing a dress from J.Crew and the groom a kilt, and the bride is Chinese. I'm torn between wearing a strappy floor-length dress that's gold underneath with black mesh over (two crappy pictures here and here), and a Chinese-style ("Mandarin style") dress from my Nga Boo with half sleeves, a collar, and ends just below the knee, in yellow brocade (somewhat like this in cut).

I'm actually having the Chinese dress fitted and picking it up tomorrow afternoon, so if it's not ready that'll make my choice for me. While I feel like the Chinese one is a more appropriate level of attire (the long one seems a bit *too* formal), it strikes me that b/c of its outlandishness that it could be worn in many more circumstances than the long one, so I should wear the long one when I can. The bride's planning to have another reception in NYC a few months away, so it could be worn then, for example, presuming I'm invited which seems a reasonable presumption since she said she'd invite my parents.

I also have shoes and a purse for the long dress, and I'd have to throw something together for the Chinese-style one.

Any thoughts?
I live in an old house, and I've seen evidence of mice in the past (poop under the sink and around the kitchen trash, where there's big holes in the walls for the pipes), but tonight I saw one for the first time - and three feet from the birdcage. I change cage papers around 5 times a week (I aim for daily but occasionally forget), any leftover fresh veggies get dumped in the kitchen twice a day. There's a trash with a lid can next to the cage that I used to dump pellets into but now will not. I'm keeping it away from the cage for a few days, but after that I'll probably return it and use it only for the cage papers and not for the pellets. I Roomba around the cage at least once a week.

So I have two questions. (1) Are they actually a threat to Kappa in any manner? I mean, I know they can be a disease vector, is that really a big deal? Any chance they're rabid? And (2) any ideas you may have to safely keep them away from Kappa (and perhaps the entire house)? Keeping the place clean is of course #1, but I keep the area around the cage cleaner than anywhere else in the house, and the kitchen is two rooms away (and I just cleaned it anyway just in case).

A colleague of mine whom I didn't know well but respect greatly passed away yesterday. It was not unexpected - she was in hospice care for terminal cancer. And yet in early July she joined me and many others in the trip to Washington DC for the jumbo union meeting as a retired member. Hence some of my great respect.

I am planning to attend her wake and funeral on Tuesday. I have never been to such things as an adult. What do I need to know other than wear black (and not a cocktail dress)? The family has asked that instead of flowers that people make a donation to the American Cancer Society. Is a card expected? Should I bring flowers in addition to a donation? The only thing I know about the funeral service is that it will be conducted by another colleague of hers who is a Reverend.
Dear Internet,

In October I am going to be applying for an equipment grant to buy a tablet PC for classroom use. Said tablet must run on Windows (XP Pro preferred), and required software is listed below (that is, those softwares that will require purchase).

  • MS Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

  • MS Outlook

  • MS Frontpage (yeah, I know, take it up with my IT)

  • Camtasia

  • Adobe/Macromedia Flash

  • Typical tablet softwarez

I will need sufficient RAM-power to run Camtasia in record mode during Powerpoint presentations, and I really want a surplus, not just barely enough. So my question for M. Internet, is manifold.

  1. What are the minimum specs for a tablet PC that can do what I want?

  2. What are the maximum specs out there now, as of October (when I'll be submitting the grant), and as of December (when I'd be getting the money)?

  3. What is the cost of such systems?

  4. What's the best brand or specific model of tablets? I'm looking for reliability, good customer support, and sturdy (as I'll be lugging it to school and back daily).

  5. What else am I forgetting to ask?

Thanks for any advice you might give this poor confused prof.

Sincerely,

Zandperl
