So I made an "arc reactor" for my second Halloween costume, and per request by [personal profile] calzephyr, here's how.

Instructions, ingredients, and images )

And here's a few selfies of the final product.

This was inspired by the fanfic Loki and Toni's Excellent Adventure in World Saving, which has a female Toni Stark. pprfaith (author) and reena_jenkins (podficcer and editor) write an amazing Toni - she's got so much depth to her reactions to the world and to what has happened to her. She's completely consistent with the Tony Stark in the films, but with the added complexity possible in writing, and add on top of that all the struggles of a woman in the normal world, let alone the business/engineering/superhero world that she's made her own, and on top of that she was born the wrong gender for what her father Howard Stark wanted, and you have an amazingly broken but still REAL Toni Stark. She is all bluster and bravado, and even she never knows how much of it is real and how much is a show intended to throw other people off track. And all of it is entirely believable.

Go read it.

The only thing I dislike about the iPhone 4S camera is its color rendition at night - without the flash it's too yellow and bland, with the flash it's too saturated and washed out. That said though, I made my boots!

And within the cut below, in order are the target image, the result w/o flash, the result w/ flash, and a close-up of the embroidery.

As usual I don't think the final result is perfect, and there are things I can actually improve if I'm to keep using this costume in future years, but it's pretty danged good if I do say so myself and certainly shows a lot of effort. The boots have a foam insole, but are basically a pair of slippers. I'd like to someday add an outsole, but the flip flops that I was going to use for that, I'm not sure how to attach them, and they're not quite shaped right anyways.

I'm working on part of a cosplay costume for Halloween, and I could use some help deciding how to put something together. I'm going to be doing Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians. He does not wear shoes, but I will be needing to leave the house in this costume, so I'm making me felted boots. If you're familiar with the movie, when they first try to induct him as a Guardian, there's a really quick flash where two of the elves try to make him put on boots. That's what I'm going for.

These are the boots I am attempting to make.
